LIMA, 12 dic 2014 (IPS) - Los

Quevedo a IPS.

Statistical analysis rules out natural-warming hypothesis with more than 99% certainty
An analysis of temperature data since 1500 all but rules out the possibility that global warming in the industrial era is just a natural fluctuation in the earth’s climate, according to a new study by McGill University physics professor Shaun Lovejoy.
The study, published online April 6 in the journal Climate Dynamics, represents a new approach to the question of whether global warming in the industrial era has been caused largely by man-made emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. Rather than using complex computer models to estimate the effects of greenhouse-gas emissions, Lovejoy examines historical data to assess the competing hypothesis: that warming over the past century is due to natural long-term variations in temperature.
“This study will be a blow to any remaining climate-change deniers,” Lovejoy says. Lovejoy’s study applies statistical methodology to determine the probability that global warming since 1880 is due to natural variability. His conclusion: the natural-warming hypothesis may be ruled out “with confidence levels great than 99%, and most likely greater than 99.9%.”
To assess the natural variability before much human interference, the new study uses “multi-proxy climate reconstructions” developed by scientists in recent years to estimate historical temperatures, as well as fluctuation-analysis techniques from nonlinear geophysics. The climate reconstructions take into account a variety of gauges found in nature, such as tree rings, ice cores, and lake sediments. And the fluctuation-analysis techniques make it possible to understand the temperature variations over wide ranges of time scales.
For the industrial era, Lovejoy’s analysis uses carbon-dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels as a proxy for all man-made climate influences – a simplification justified by the tight relationship between global economic activity and the emission of greenhouse gases and particulate pollution, he says. “This allows the new approach to implicitly include the cooling effects of particulate pollution that are still poorly quantified in computer models,” he adds.
While his new study makes no use of the huge computer models commonly used by scientists to estimate the magnitude of future climate change, Lovejoy’s findings effectively complement those of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), he says. His study predicts, with 95% confidence, that a doubling of carbon-dioxide levels in the atmosphere would cause the climate to warm by between 2.5 and 4.2 degrees Celsius. That range is more precise than – but in line with -- the IPCC’s prediction that temperatures would rise by 1.5 to 4.5 degrees Celsius if CO2 concentrations double.
“We’ve had a fluctuation in average temperature that’s just huge since 1880 – on the order of about 0.9 degrees Celsius,” Lovejoy says. “This study shows that the odds of that being caused by natural fluctuations are less than one in a hundred and are likely to be less than one in a thousand.
“While the statistical rejection of a hypothesis can’t generally be used to conclude the truth of any specific alternative, in many cases – including this one – the rejection of one greatly enhances the credibility of the other.”
Although current global warming may have a large anthropogenic component, its quantification relies primarily on complex General Circulation Models (GCM’s) assumptions and codes; it is desirable to complement this with empirically based methodologies. Previous attempts to use the recent climate record have concentrated on “fingerprinting” or otherwise comparing the record with GCM outputs. By using CO2 radiative forcings as a linear surrogate for all anthropogenic effects we estimate the total anthropogenic warming and (effective) climate sensitivity finding: ΔT anth = 0.87 ± 0.11 K, λ2xCO2,eff=3.08±0.58K . These are close the IPPC AR5 values ΔT anth = 0.85 ± 0.20 K and λ2xCO2=1.5−4.5K (equilibrium) climate sensitivity and are independent of GCM models, radiative transfer calculations and emission histories. We statistically formulate the hypothesis of warming through natural variability by using centennial scale probabilities of natural fluctuations estimated using scaling, fluctuation analysis on multiproxy data. We take into account two nonclassical statistical features—long range statistical dependencies and “fat tailed” probability distributions (both of which greatly amplify the probability of extremes). Even in the most unfavourable cases, we may reject the natural variability hypothesis at confidence levels >99 %.ALKAIDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12356003882001417021noreply@blogger.com0Valladolid, España41.652251 -4.724532100000033141.46259 -5.0472556000000335 41.841912 -4.4018086000000327tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10583190361523947.post-61715823551098596232014-03-16T21:19:00.004+01:002014-03-16T21:19:56.640+01:00Cooperativas eléctricas: una alternativa energética para tu hogar

Climate change is killing penguin chicks from the world's largest colony of Magellanic penguins, not just indirectly -- by depriving them of food, as has been repeatedly documented for these and other seabirds -- but directly as a result of drenching rainstorms and, at other times, heat.
Too big for parents to sit over protectively, but still too young to have grown waterproof feathers, downy penguin chicks exposed to drenching rain can struggle and die of hypothermia in spite of the best efforts of their concerned parents. And during extreme heat, chicks without waterproofing can't take a dip in cooling waters as adults can.
Various research groups have published findings on the reproductive repercussions from single storms or heat waves, events that individually are impossible to tie to climate change. The new results span 27 years of data collected in Argentina under the direction of Dee Boersma, UW biology professorand have been published in the Jan. 29 issue of PLOS ONE.
"It's the first long-term study to show climate change having a major impact on chick survival and reproductive success," said Boersma, who has led field work since 1983 at the world's largest breeding area for Magellanic penguins, about halfway up the Atlantic coast of Argentina at Punta Tombo, where 200,000 pairs reside from September through February to have their young.
During a span of 27 years, an average of 65 percent of chicks died per year, with some 40 percent starving. Climate change, a relatively new cause of chick death, killed an average of 7 percent of chicks per year, but there were years when it was the most common cause of death, killing 43 percent of all chicks one year and fully half in another.
Starvation and weather will likely interact increasingly as climate changes, Boersma said."Starving chicks are more likely to die in a storm," she said. "There may not be much we can do to mitigate climate change, but steps could be taken to make sure the Earth's largest colony of Magellanic penguins have enough to eat by creating a marine protected reserve, with regulations on fishing, where penguins forage while raising small chicks."
Rainfall and the number of storms per breeding season have already increased at the Argentine study site, said Ginger Rebstock, UW research scientist and the co-author of the paper. For instance in the first two weeks of December, when all chicks are less than 25 days old and most vulnerable to storm death, the number of storms increased between 1983 and 2010: "We're going to see years where almost no chicks survive if climate change makes storms bigger and more frequent during vulnerable times of the breeding season as climatologists predict”.
Magellanics are medium-sized penguins standing about 15 inches tall and weighing about 10 pounds. Males of the species sound like braying donkeys when they vocalize. Of the Earth's 17 species of penguins, 10 -- including Magellanics -- breed where there is no snow, it is relatively dry and temperatures can be temperate.
Punta Tombo is so arid that it gets an average of only 4 inches (100 mm) of rain during the six-month breeding season and, sometimes, no rain falls at all. Rain is a problem and kills down-covered chicks ages 9 to 23 days if they can't warm up and dry off after heavy storms in November and December when temperatures are likely to dip. If chicks can live 25 days or more, most have enough juvenile plumage to protect them. Once chicks die, parents do not lay additional eggs that season.
The findings are based on weather information, collected at the regional airport and by researchers in the field, as well as from penguin counts. During the breeding season researchers visit nests once or twice a day to see what is happening and record the contents of the nest, often hunting for chicks when they move around as they get older. When chicks disappear or are found dead, the researchers turn into detectives looking for evidence of starvation, predators or other causes of death such as being pecked or beaten by other penguins.
Just back from two months in the field, Boersma said heat this season took a greater toll on chicks than storms. Such variability between years is the reason why the number of chicks dying from climate change is not a tidy, ever-increasing figure each year. Over time, however, the researchers expect climate change will be an increasingly important cause of death.
Also contributing to increasing deaths from climate change is the fact that, over 27 years, penguin parents have arrived to the breeding site later and later in the year, probably because the fish they eat also are arriving later, Boersma said. The later in the year chicks hatch the more likely they'll still be in their down-covered stage when storms typically pick up in November and December.
Besides the coast of Argentina, Magellanic penguins also breed on the Chile-side of South America and in the Falkand (Malvinas) Islands, breeding ranges they share with some 60 other seabird species. These species also are likely to suffer negative impacts from climate change, losing whole generations as the penguins have in the study area, the co-authors say.
"Increasing storminess bodes ill not only for Magellanic penguins but for many other species," they write.
Abstract
Climate change is causing more frequent and intense storms, and climate models predict this trend will continue, potentially affecting wildlife populations. Since 1960 the number of days with >20 mm of rain increased near Punta Tombo, Argentina. Between 1983 and 2010 we followed 3496 known-age Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) chicks at Punta Tombo to determine how weather impacted their survival. In two years, rain was the most common cause of death killing 50% and 43% of chicks. In 26 years starvation killed the most chicks. Starvation and predation were present in all years. Chicks died in storms in 13 of 28 years and in 16 of 233 storms. Storm mortality was additive; there was no relationship between the number of chicks killed in storms and the numbers that starved (P = 0.75) or that were eaten (P = 0.39). However, when more chicks died in storms, fewer chicks fledged (P = 0.05, R2 = 0.14). More chicks died when rainfall was higher and air temperature lower. Most chicks died from storms when they were 9–23 days old; the oldest chick killed in a storm was 41 days old. Storms with heavier rainfall killed older chicks as well as more chicks. Chicks up to 70 days old were killed by heat. Burrow nests mitigated storm mortality (N = 1063). The age span of chicks in the colony at any given time increased because the synchrony of egg laying decreased since 1983, lengthening the time when chicks are vulnerable to storms. Climate change that increases the frequency and intensity of storms results in more reproductive failure of Magellanic penguins, a pattern likely to apply to many species breeding in the region. Climate variability has already lowered reproductive success of Magellanic penguins and is likely undermining the resilience of many other species.ALKAIDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12356003882001417021noreply@blogger.com0Valladolid, España41.652251 -4.724532100000033141.46259 -5.0472556000000335 41.841912 -4.4018086000000327tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10583190361523947.post-37629641684905809382014-01-25T12:35:00.001+01:002014-01-25T12:40:39.909+01:00La prohibición de los perdigones de plomo es efectiva/The ban of lead-shot is effective

Lead shot was forbidden in 2001 in Spanish wetlands on the Ramsar List of these areas of international importance. Ten years later, this prohibition -and the consequent use of steel shot by hunters- has started to bear fruit, according to a report in the journal ‘Environment International’.
“The most important part of our work is that it shows that, despite it’s still covering a partial area, the change of material from lead to steel shot has reduced waterfowl poisoning and the contamination of hunted meat,” says Rafael Mateo Soria of the Hunting Resources Research Institute (IREC) and co-author of the study.
Lead shot accumulating in wetlands, with over 100 per square metre in many areas, remains in the sediments for decades. Its main damage is to the health of waterfowl. When the shot is eaten it is retained in the gizzard and is worn down in the stomach, freeing lead that reaches the animal’s tissues.
In species such as the mallard, 30% caught at the start of the 1990s in the Ebro delta had ingested lead shot, a figure which has now dropped to 15%. The same trend has been seen in other species such as the northern shoveller, the Eurasian teal and the common pochard.
On the other hand, the case of the northern pintail caught continues to cause alarm since over 70% have shot in their gizzards, a rate similar to that seen three decades ago. The scientist notes that to discover the reason for the high percentage of poisoning in this species, they will start to fit birds with transmitters. "What we do know is that, because of its type of diet, this is a species with a high risk of ingesting shot. Nevertheless, in others that also have these risk factors, such as the common pochard, the rate has reduced after the change to steel shot," he added.
Another problem caused by lead shot is the contamination of meat. Even after lead shot was banned, the traces in animals caught with this metal exceed the limits set for meat for human consumption.
Researchers stress that the hunters’ compliance with this prohibition has been very high and that they have continued to hunt waterfowl in the same amount after the change from lead to steel. However, the law forbids lead shot in protected wetlands only. For this reason, lead shot is permitted in rice fields that ducks use as feeding areas, thus maintaining focuses of contamination for the birds and their meat.
This study has allowed the assessment of the effectiveness of the measures adopted by countries signing the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), an agreement to protect waterfowl along their entire migration route between Africa and Eurasia and signed by some 30 European countries.
Abstract
The use of lead (Pb) ammunition in the form of shot pellets has been identified as a Pb exposure risk in wildlife and their human consumers. We explore the hypothesis that Pb shot ban enforcement reduces the risk of avian Pb poisoning as well as Pb exposure in game meat consumers. We assessed compliance with a partial ban on Pb shot commencing in 2003 by examination of 937 waterbirds harvested by hunters between 2007 and 2012 in the Ebro delta (Spain). Prevalence of Pb shot ingestion was determined, as were Pb concentrations in liver and muscle tissue to evaluate the potential for Pb exposure in game meat consumers. Hunted birds with only embedded Pb shot (no steel) declined from 26.9% in 2007–08 to < 2% over the following three hunting seasons after ban reinforcement. Pb shot ingestion in mallards decreased from a pre-ban value of 30.2% to 15.5% in the post-ban period. Liver Pb levels were predominantly defined by the presence of ingested shot, whereas muscle levels were defined by the presence of both ingested and embedded shot. Only 2.5% of mallard muscle tissue had Pb levels above European Union regulations for meat (0.1 μg/g wet weight) in the 2008–09 season, when Pb shot ingestion prevalence was also at a minimum (5.1%). Effective restrictions in Pb ammunition use have a dual benefit since this reduces Pb exposure for game meat consumers due to embedded ammunition as well as reducing Pb poisoning in waterbirds.ALKAIDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12356003882001417021noreply@blogger.com0Valladolid, España41.652251 -4.724532100000033141.46259 -5.0472556000000335 41.841912 -4.4018086000000327tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10583190361523947.post-64607591724261923772013-12-25T13:05:00.000+01:002014-01-26T19:48:51.174+01:00¿Voy bien para Murcia?/Is this the right road to Murcia?

A disoriented scops owl that undertook a suicide trip to the Arctic Circle, is recovering in the Wildlife Center “El Valle” in Murcia (Spain), after a Norwegian scientific society sent it back by plane from Oslo.
The bird looking you from the picture is miraculously alive. It got the wrong direction during its winter migration journey to Africa, and appeared in Tromsø (Norway). How did this small nocturnal bird of prey to almost 70 degrees north latitude is a mystery, and even more it do not die on the long journey.
The bird was found, some weeks ago, in a very weak state and harassed by crows in the streets of the capital of the Arctic Circle. Handed over to Karl-Otto Jacobsen, from the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, the small bird has flown, this time in plane like a Norwegian tourist, from the cold North to its sunny Murcia country.
"The most likely theory is that the bird goes wrong because summer came late in Spain and other parts of Europe. This is another consequence of climate change affecting the targeting ability of the birds", says biologist Mario Leon, a researcher at the University of Murcia in charge of collecting the singular bag at the airport of El Altet (Alicante). The small owl travelled from Oslo, in a cage located in the baggage area, with a crumbled chicken breast and a little water to endure the long journey over 2,500 km (in addition to 1,700 km from Tromsø to Oslo) in the dark of the hold plane.
The scops owl (Otus scops) is a common bird in Murcia, even in the city gardens, where the expert ears can quickly identify its singing: a short and intermittent hiss, like sonar, which emits every three seconds. It measures just over 20 cm and is almost 100% insectivore (and a great devourer of cockroaches) although not averse to small rodents.
“We are now checking how it habituates, as well as how it is affected by the temperature change," explains Mario Leon, still amazed at the effort of their Norwegian colleagues to safeguard the brave bird, which in its short life (it was born this spring) has flown almost to the North Pole, has became protagonist of the Norwegian media, and has flown after back to Alicante, this time in plane, to spend the winter in the region
Climatic changes -- and the results of those changes -- could occur within decades or even sooner, and they are becoming a greater concern for scientists, according to a new paper from the National Academy of Sciences.
"The most challenging changes are the abrupt ones," said James White, a professor of geological sciences at the University of Colorado in Boulder and chair of the report committee, at a press conference Tuesday (December 4).
The paper focuses on those impacts due to climate change that can happen most quickly. Among these are the rapid decline in Arctic sea ice that scientists have seen in the last decade and increased extinction pressure on plants and animals caused by the rapidly warming climate.
Many such changes, according to Tony Barnosky, a professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, are "things that people in this room will be around to see." He emphasized that scientists are "really worried about what's going to happen in the next several years or decades."
"The planet is going to be warmer than most species living on Earth today have seen it, including humans," said Barnosky. "The pace of change is orders of magnitude higher than what species have experienced in the last tens of millions of years."
Other, more gradually occurring changes can still have abrupt impacts on the ecosystem and human systems, such as the loss of fisheries or shifts in where certain crops can be cultivated. Rapid loss of ice, for example, would mean that sea levels rise at a much faster rate than the current trend, which would have a significant effect on coastal regions. A 3-foot rise in the seas is easier to prepare for if it happens on a 100-year horizon than if it happens within 30 years.
According to Barnosky, "If you think about gradual change, you can see where the road is and where you're going. With abrupt changes and effects, the road suddenly drops out from under you."
The paper did offer two bits of good news. One, scientists don't believe that climate change is likely to shut down the Atlantic jetstream, a possibility that had been discussed in some scientific research. They also don't believe that large, rapid emissions of methane from ice and Arctic soil will pose a serious threat in the short term, as had been considered previously.
The paper recommends increased investment in an early-warning system for monitoring abrupt impacts, such as surveillance programs to facilitate closer tracking of melting ice and methane releases, for example. Right now, investment in those systems is lacking in the U.S., and monitoring programs have been cut in recent years.
"The time has come for us to quit talking and actually take some action," said White.

After a 10-year investigation, no one is going to have to pay the cleanup bill for the Prestige disaster
The state will not see a single cent of the more than four billion euros it was demanding from those responsible for the Prestige oil spill of 2002, given that no-one has been found guilty of causing the shipwreck and the ensuing oil slick. Nor will the state be paying out any compensation to the victims, since the decision to keep the damaged tanker away from the coast was not reckless, according to this week’s ruling by the Provincial Court of A Coruña. Unable to find any guilty parties, the court has simply slapped the ship’s captain, Apostolos Mangouras, with a short sentence for disobedience after taking too long to agree to his vessel being towed, once he had raised the alarm. This conviction is of no consequence as far as damages go.
There is a very noticeable lack of proportion between the means employed to reach this conclusion — a 10-year investigation, a nine-month trial — and the results. “Only ancillary aspects of the event have been proven, not the substantial ones from the perspective of Penal Law,” argues the tribunal. Then it goes on to say that a few of these aspects could have been investigated better “but were not;” an integral expert analysis of the wreckage would have had an “unacceptable” cost, and “nobody” knows the exact causes of what happened.
Nor do the judges know what the oil tanker’s destination was — they write that it might have been the port of Singapore or “another Asian port;” they also note that one of the ship’s officers, Ireneo Maloto, “has not been put on trial and remains missing, despite the police having received relatively reliable information regarding his whereabouts,” for reasons that are not explained. Finally, the Spanish government at the time, which was led by José María Aznar of the conservative Popular Party, was absolved of any responsibility for the fact that 63,000 tons of oil were released into the environment. In fact, the judges ruled that the director general of the Merchant Marine, José Luis López-Sors, did the right thing in sending the ship out to sea rather than bringing it in to shore.
It is evident that this result is largely due to having assigned the investigation to a small courthouse in the small town of Corcubión, which had to face the daunting task of investigating the sinking of an oil tanker registered in the Bahamas, with Liberian owners and logistical operators, a British insurer, US certification and chartered by a firm called Crown Resources, of “questionable” activities, according to the court. The absence of criminal responsibility is also due to the fact that even though the ship was in a very precarious condition, it had all the necessary permits to operate at sea.
The lesson to be drawn from this judicial result — which can still be appealed — is that Spain lacks the force to demand responsibility from those who carry out environmentally dangerous activities. The BP oil company had to plead guilty of the spill in the Gulf of Mexico before the US administration; and the French court in charge of the shipwreck of the Erika oil tanker, which contaminated 400 kilometers of coastline, handed down convictions against the guilty parties. Yet the Prestige tribunal cannot find anyone who is guilty of covering 2,980 kilometers of coastline in oil. It is clear that taxpayers are the only ones who have paid for the cleanup, and that in this case at least, polluting doesnot pay, because the justice system has not investigated who was behind it.

Energy consumption continues to grow. The costs of generation and transmission of energy must come down for the increased consumption to be sustainable. Energy must be generated without depleting resources, without causing pollution, and without incurring waste. Transmission of energy too must be efficient. These ideal goals, when realized, would enrich lives, regardless of economic distinction.
A viable solution is the onsite generation of electricity using the photovoltaic (PV) method of converting solar energy directly into electrical energy. The PV method uses semiconductor devices called solar cells. With constant reduction of the cost, this method is the most promising direct current (DC) power source for rich and poor globally. Due to the availability of solar energy all over the world, PV generation is not hostage to the usual geo-political constraints. Thus, it can power an energy revolution just like the information revolution powered by the internet continues to shape our world today.
Rajendra Singh (Clemson University) says that according to his prediction of 1980, "the vast majority (~90 %) of installed more than 100 Giga Watt PV systems employ traditional photovoltaic panels made of crystalline silicon (the second most abundant element in Earth's crust)”. Due to lack of functional reliability and the concomitant lack of economic bankability, PV systems employing solar concentrators have not made a significant impact worldwide. The use of thin films of semiconductors such as cadmium telluride, amorphous silicon and copper indium gallium arsenide is still to make a major commercial impact. PV modules comprising organic and dye-sensitized solar cells shall not play a role in bulk power generation, without fundamental breakthroughs in material synthesis and performance.
For increasing the efficiency of single-junction solar cells beyond the current limitations, several new approaches have been proposed by scientists. These approaches are based on concepts such as multiple exciton generation, carrier multiplication, intermediate band gap , etc. However, after applying manufacturing criteria to ensure commercial viability, the researchers became pessimistic about the efficacy of these approaches for bulk power generation.
A new multi-terminal multi-junction architecture for inexpensive PV electricity generation has been proposed by th Dr. Singh's research team. Efficiency will exceed the currently feasible 25%. The proposed architecture is based on the use of currently commercial Crystalline solar cells and thin-film solar cells made of materials (such as copper oxide) that are abundant in Earth's crust. Although this combination is expected to boost efficiency, the additional manufacturing costs to be incurred thereby remain unknown..
According to Dr. Singh "the creation of local DC power grids can save power being lost in the transmission and unnecessary conversion from DC to alternating current (AC) and then back to DC." Most electronic appliances and electric loads operate on DC and by transmitting and converting AC power to DC about 30% of the total power generated is lost.
Today, PV electricity generation and distribution on a DC microgrid is the best way to power villages without access to electricity. It is also the best option to replace aging power generation and transmission infrastructure in USA and other developed countries.
Abstract
Globally, the cumulative installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity has topped the 100-gigawatt (GW) milestone and is expected to reach 200 GW by the year 2015. More than 90% of the installed PV capacity employs bulk-silicon solar cells. Engineering problems that include thermal and optical challenges have not permitted the large-scale commercialization of concentration PV systems, lack of functional reliability—and the concomitant lack of economic bankability—being a major barrier. For increasing the efficiency of single-junction cells beyond the Shockley–Queisser limit, several approaches based on concepts such as multiple exciton generation, carrier multiplication, hot-carrier extraction, etc., have been proposed; however, these do not seem to be commercially viable. Since both bulk-silicon and thin-film (amorphous silicon, cadmium telluride, and copper indium gallium selenide) solar cells remain as the only two commercially viable options for terrestrial PV applications, a multi-terminal multi-junction architecture appears promising for inexpensive PV electricity generation with efficiency exceeding the currently feasible 25%. The architecture exploits the present commercial silicon solar cells along with abundant and ultra-low-cost materials such as CuO . With the availability of well-controlled manufacturing processes at the sub 2-nm length scale, it will become possible to manufacture ultra-high efficiency and ultra-low cost PV electricity generation modules based on silicon.ALKAIDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12356003882001417021noreply@blogger.com0Valladolid, España41.652251 -4.724532100000033141.46259 -5.0472556000000335 41.841912 -4.4018086000000327tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10583190361523947.post-17081344229666360182013-10-14T20:37:00.000+02:002013-10-14T20:37:00.460+02:00Al cambio climático golpeará primero los trópicos/Extreme climate will hurts tropics first

By the year 2047 the mean air temperature around the planet will shift completely out of the range seen in recent history. From that point on, even a cold year will be warmer than any warm year from 1860 to 2005 if nations continue to emit carbon dioxide the way they do now. And the new extreme temperatures—the new normal—will first occur not in the Arctic but in the tropics, where people, plants and wildlife are least equipped to adapt. That disquieting analysis comes from a massive new study led by Camilo Mora at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, recently published in Nature.
The report begins with the recognition that the annual mean global air temperature fluctuates from year to year, even though it has been climbing overall since the industrial revolution began. If the world does nothing new, then the temperature by 2047 will exceed even the highest annual temperature from 1860 to 2005. If the world aggressively cuts back on emissions, then the date will be delayed until 2069. Mora and his colleagues crunched data from 39 different climate models that feed two future scenarios: business as usual (leading to the 2049 date) and aggressive mitigation (the 2069 date). The same two scenarios are cornerstones of the new climate assessment released recently by the International Panel on Climate Change.
Mora’s team also ran the exercise for six other variables: sea-surface water temperature, evaporation, heat flux, ocean pH, precipitation and transpiration (moisture emitted by plants). They then generated a map for each variable showing when the date of departure occurs for all places around the world.
The surprising revelation is that “the earliest and most extreme effects will happen in the tropics,” Mora says, and not in the Arctic, where so much concern is focused. That’s because the natural variation in air and ocean temperatures and other climate-related variables in the tropics is very small, so only relatively minor changes will push these conditions out of bounds. As a result, Mora says, tropical plants and animals will be stressed the most, because species accustomed to living within such narrow fluctuations will not be able to adapt quickly enough to such unprecedented and rapid climate changes. More of the world’s species live in the tropics than anywhere else, so global biodiversity will be hit hard.
Many of the world’s low-income nations are also located at tropical latitudes, and they are likely to struggle to adapt to the new extreme climate. As the paper concludes: “This suggests that any progress to decrease the rate of ongoing climate change will require a bigger commitment from developed countries to decrease their emissions but will also require more extensive funding of social and conservation programs in developing countries to minimize the impacts of climate change.”
One question for policy makers is whether the years 2047 and 2069 are firm transition points. After all, those departure dates are compared with only a 145-year period, from 1860 to 2005. Mora says the uncertainty of the calculations for 2047 is plus or minus three years and for 2069 is about four years. To add further rigor Mora’s team ran the same analysis against the last 1,000 years of global temperatures and found that each of the two temperature departure dates only increases by two years. The reason, Mora says, is that in 145 years “you pick up enough extremes to give a reliable long-term curve.”
Ecological and societal disruptions by modern climate change are critically determined by the time frame over which climates shift beyond historical analogues. Here we present a new index of the year when the projected mean climate of a given location moves to a state continuously outside the bounds of historical variability under alternative greenhouse gas emissions scenarios. Using 1860 to 2005 as the historical period, this index has a global mean of 2069 (±18 years s.d.) for near-surface air temperature under an emissions stabilization scenario and 2047 (±14 years s.d.) under a ‘business-as-usual’ scenario. Unprecedented climates will occur earliest in the tropics and among low-income countries, highlighting the vulnerability of global biodiversity and the limited governmental capacity to respond to the impacts of climate change. Our findings shed light on the urgency of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions if climates potentially harmful to biodiversity and society are to be prevented.ALKAIDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12356003882001417021noreply@blogger.com0Valladolid, España41.652251 -4.724532100000033141.46259 -5.0472556000000335 41.841912 -4.4018086000000327tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10583190361523947.post-23585589513180324222013-08-03T09:53:00.001+02:002013-08-03T09:54:54.442+02:00La realidad del Calentamiento Global/The reality of Global Warming

How has the surface temperature of Earth been changing? To help find out, Earth scientists collected temperature records from over 1000 weather stations around the globe since 1880, and combined them with modern satellite data. The above movie dramatizes the result showing 130 years of planet-wide temperature changes relative to the local average temperatures in the mid-1900s. In the above global maps, red means warmer and blue means colder. On average, the display demonstrates that the temperature on Earth has increased by nearly one degree Celsius over the past 130 years, and many of the warmest years on record have occurred only recently. Global climate change is of more than passing interest -- it is linked to global weather severity and coastal sea water levels.
The new energy conversion concept was chosen as the cover story of ChemSusChem, a scientific journal for chemistry, sustainability, energy, and materials. The research was supported by scientists from a research group led by Dr. Sven Kerzenmacher at Prof. Dr. Roland Zengerle’s Laboratory for MEMS Applications.
Biofuel cells produce electricity that is environmentally friendly and conserves resources, for instance from organic waste material. They can use enzymes as catalysts to enable electrochemical reactions that generate electricity. In contrast to precious metal catalysts in conventional fuel cells, these enzymes can be obtained at low cost from renewable raw materials. For many technical applications, however, their lifetime is too short.
The new concept developed by the Freiburg scientists solves this problem by ensuring that the fuel cell is continually resupplied with the biocatalyst. The supplier of the fuel cell is Trametes versicolor, a tree fungus that is also found in temperate climates: It releases the fungal enzyme Laccase (a copper-containing oxidase enzyme) into a solution surrounding the cathode – the positive pole of the cell – where it enables the electrochemical conversion of oxygen.
Experiments conducted by the researchers demonstrate that this method can be used to extend the lifetime of the cathodes to as much as 120 days, and even considerably longer lifetimes seem possible. By comparison, the cathodes only have a lifetime of 14 days if they are not supplied with more of the enzymes. Since the enzymatic solution can be supplied directly to the fuel cell without time-consuming and expensive purification, the costs are reduced to a minimum.
Potential applications for the concept include microbial fuel cells that generate electricity from wastewater, a technology Kerzenmacher’s research group is also developing.
Abstract
Enzymatic biofuel cells (BFCs) show great potential for the direct conversion of biochemically stored energy from renewable biomass resources into electricity. However, enzyme purification is time-consuming and expensive. Furthermore, the long-term use of enzymatic BFCs is hindered by enzyme degradation, which limits their lifetime to only a few weeks. We show, for the first time, that crude culture supernatant from enzyme-secreting microorganisms (Trametes versicolor) can be used without further treatment to supply the enzyme laccase to the cathode of a mediatorless BFC. Polarization curves show that there is no significant difference in the cathode performance when using crude supernatant that contains laccase compared to purified laccase in culture medium or buffer solution. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the oxygen reduction activity of this enzymatic cathode can be sustained over a period of at least 120 days by periodic resupply of crude culture supernatant. This is more than five times longer than control cathodes without the resupply of culture supernatant. During the operation period of 120 days, no progressive loss of potential is observed, which suggests that significantly longer lifetimes than shown in this work may be possible. Our results demonstrate the possibility to establish simple, cost efficient, and mediatorless enzymatic BFC cathodes that do not require expensive enzyme purification procedures. Furthermore, they show the feasibility of an enzymatic BFC with an extended lifetime, in which self-replicating microorganisms provide the electrode with catalytically active enzymes in a continuous or periodic mannerALKAIDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12356003882001417021noreply@blogger.com0Valladolid, España41.652251 -4.724532100000033141.46259 -5.0472556000000335 41.841912 -4.4018086000000327tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10583190361523947.post-75039491862291511272013-06-09T13:48:00.003+02:002013-06-09T13:48:17.176+02:00Las energías eólicas en las Canarias disminuyen el déficit de tarifa

People living in Arctic areas can be more sensitive to pollutants due to their genetics, says researcher Arja Rautio at the Centre for Arctic Medicine in the University of Oulu, Finland. This is unfortunate since the northernmost areas of Europe are receiving more harmful chemicals. Scientists believe climate change may be a culprit as air and water mass movements push some of these undesirable chemicals towards the Arctic. “In real life, people are exposed to lots of chemicals,” says Rautio, who leads studies into the human health effects from contaminants and the influence of climate change in a EU-funded project called ArcRisk, “and I think the people of the north are exposed to higher levels than for example the general population in Europe.”
Many new contaminants like fluorinated and brominated compounds and bisphenol A can act on hormones and so have impacts on human health. But seeing an effect on humans, at the population level, could take ten or even 20 years, especially in the case of cancer, she adds. This is why ArcRisk has established a database containing data on concentration levels and trends of contaminants in humans. The project team analysed frozen blood samples collected in Norway in 1978, 1986, 1995 and 2008 for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), chlorinated pesticides and polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs).
The main challenge that project scientists struggle with is to disentangle the effects of contaminant chemicals from what we do in our everyday lives. “We know that dioxins can lead to more diabetes and high blood pressure,” says Rautio, “but there are many other confounding factors. We are changing our diet and many of us are less active and those lifestyle choices can also increase the risk of diseases like diabetes.” The results of the project are due to be presented at a conference of Arctic Frontiers in Tromsø, Norway, in January 2014

Health problems induced by these chemicals could be worse than anticipated. Some of the pollutants found in the Arctic by the project scientists like the fluorinated compounds have higher affinities for hormone receptors than even the natural hormones.Animal studies already show worrying trends that do not bode well for humans. “When we see these findings in Arctic animals I am very concerned about what we will find with regards to humans” says Geir Wing Gabrielsen, an environmental scientist at the Norwegian Polar Institute, who is not part of ArcRisk. He notes that long periods of warm air are being transported to the Arctic and that the sea currents around places like the Svalbard islands [located midway between Norway and the North Pole] now consist of warmer Atlantic water; they used to consist of polar waters.
Rautio concludes that there is a need to clarify the effects so that people—not only in those living in the remote northern areas— can make decisions about their own lives, what to eat, how to avoid exposure to harm.
PureMadi, a nonprofit University of Virginia organization, has invented a simple ceramic water purification tablet. Called MadiDrop, the tablet -- developed and extensively tested at University of Virginia -- is impregnated with silver or copper nanoparticles. It can repeatedly disinfect water for up to six months simply by resting in a vessel where water is poured. It is being developed for use in communities in South Africa that have little or no access to clean water.
"Madi" is the Tshivenda word for water. PureMadi brings together U.Va. professors and students to improve water quality, human health, local enterprise and quality of life in the developing world.
During the past year, PureMadi has established a water filter factory in Limpopo province, South Africa, employing local workers. The factory produced several hundred flowerpot-like water filters. According to James Smith, a U.Va. civil and environmental engineer, "Eventually that factory will be capable of producing about 500 to 1,000 filters per month, and our 10-year plan is to build 10 to 12 factories in South Africa and other countries…/…"Each filter can serve a family of five or six for two to five years, so we plan to eventually serve at least 500,000 people per year with new filters."
The idea is to create sustainable businesses that serve their communities and employ local workers. A small percentage of the profits go back to PureMadi and will be used to help establish more factories.
The filters are made of local clay, sawdust and water. Those materials are mixed and pressed into a mold. The result is a flowerpot-shaped filter, which is then fired in a kiln. The firing burns off the sawdust, leaving a ceramic with very fine pores. The filter is then painted with a thin solution of silver or copper nanoparticles that serve as a highly effective disinfectant for waterborne pathogens, the type of which can cause severe diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration.
The design allows a user to pour water from an untreated source, such as a river or well, into the pot and allow it to filter through into a five-gallon bucket underneath. The pot has a flow rate of one to three liters per hour, enough for drinking and cooking. The filtered water is accessed through a spigot in the bucket.
Testing shows that the filters are safe to use and release only trace amounts of silver or copper particles, well within the safe water standards of the developed world. The filters also would be useful in rural areas of developed countries such as the United States where people rely on untreated well water.
Silver has been used since time immemorial in various forms (metallic silver, silver nitrate ...) for the treatment of burns, wounds and bacterial infections. Its use declined due to the advent of antibiotics, but as many bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics, silver presents today a potential interest as antimicrobial agent. Furthermore, its use as nanoparticles increases its antimicrobial capabilities due to the large surface area of these particles.
Abstract
Silver has been in use since time immemorial in the form of metallic silver, silver nitrate, silver sulfadiazine for the treatment of burns, wounds and several bacterial infections. But due to the emergence of several antibiotics the use of these silver compounds has been declined remarkably. Nanotechnology is gaining tremendous impetus in the present century due to its capability of modulating metals into their nanosize, which drastically changes the chemical, physical and optical properties of metals. Metallic silver in the form of silver nanoparticles has made a remarkable comeback as a potential antimicrobial agent. The use of silver nanoparticles is also important, as several pathogenic bacteria have developed resistance against various antibiotics. Hence, silver nanoparticles have emerged up with diverse medical applications ranging from silver based dressings, silver coated medicinal devices, such as nanogels, nanolotions, etc.

A good portion of the biological carbon on Earth is stored in the seafloor as methane hydrate, a solid clathrate compound, composition CH4 . 5.8-6.0 H2O, in which a large amount of methane is trapped within a crystal structure of water, forming a solid similar to ice. Originally thought to occur only in the outer regions of the Solar System where temperatures are low and water ice is common, significant deposits of methane clathrate have been found under sediments on the ocean floors of Earth.
Changes in the temperature or direction of the Gulf Stream, which carries warm water north from the Gulf of Mexico, have heated sediments in a strip along the North Atlantic seafloor by 8 degrees Celsius, unlocking 2.5 billion metric tons of methane from deep-sea caches, scientists report in the Oct. 25 Nature.
This is the first study to suggest that methane hydrate melting is related to ocean currents themselves, says study coauthor Benjamin Phrampus (Southern Methodist University in Dallas). Previous studies suggested that the global ocean temperature would have to increase to cause hydrate breakdown, which would take a very huge input of energy, he says. “We don’t need this large amount of energy to explain this. It’s simply a change in the ocean currents.”
The conversion of methane hydrate to gas isn’t nearly so apocalyptic as the effects caused by ‘ice-nine’ (in Kurt Vonnegut’s 1963 novel Cat’s Cradle, that crystallizes all liquid water it touches, with the power to wipe out all life on Earth in an instant. though. While methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than CO2, at the depths it’s being released most of the methane will never reach the atmosphere. Instead, it will dissolve in seawater, where microbes will guzzle it up and convert it to CO2. Even if methane does reach the surface, its lifetime in air is only about 10 years.
To affect global warming, “you’d have to add quite a bit of methane” says geophysicist Carolyn Ruppel of the U.S. Geological Survey. Where it becomes a problem, Ruppel says, is if this conversion makes underwater slopes much more prone to landslides. These slides might release even more methane from the seabed or trigger tsunamis.
Sudden methane hydrate release has been proposed as the cause of global warming events like the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum, a rapid spike in global temperature of more than 5 degrees Celsius that occurred about 55 million years ago. Compared with the PETM, the amount of gas being released by hydrates off of the U.S. east coast is very small, says Phrampus, but he notes that “it’s very unlikely that this is the only part of the world where it’s occurring.”
The study relied on indirect measurements of seafloor temperature to infer that hydrates are disintegrating. These methane solids can form only in the top few hundred meters of ocean sediments. Below that, the Earth’s warm interior keeps methane a gas. Seismic signals revealed the depth where solid hydrates met gassy methane. Comparing this depth with theoretical predictions suggested that the region was probably cooler in the past, but changes in the Gulf Stream 5,000 years ago are causing it to heat up.
It’s like seeing a block of ice on a warm, sunny day: you can infer that the ice is melting even if you can’t see it. By similar logic, from rising sediment temperatures scientists suspect that a big chunk of the frozen methane must be vaporizing, even without observing it directly.
Methane hydrates will be breaking down over the next few centuries if the Gulf Stream doesn’t cool off or shift its position. Because scientists don’t know how much methane hydrate is out there or how much gas could be released, however, the impact on global climate remains unclear.
Abstract
The Gulf Stream is an ocean current that modulates climate in the Northern Hemisphere by transporting warm waters from the Gulf of Mexico into the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. A changing Gulf Stream has the potential to thaw and convert hundreds of gigatonnes of frozen methane hydrate trapped below the sea floor into methane gas, increasing the risk of slope failure and methane release. How the Gulf Stream changes with time and what effect these changes have on methane hydrate stability is unclear. Here, using seismic data combined with thermal models, we show that recent changes in intermediate-depth ocean temperature associated with the Gulf Stream are rapidly destabilizing methane hydrate along a broad swathe of the North American margin. The area of active hydrate destabilization covers at least 10,000 square kilometres of the United States eastern margin, and occurs in a region prone to kilometre-scale slope failures. Previous hypothetical studies3, 5 postulated that an increase of five degrees Celsius in intermediate-depth ocean temperatures could release enough methane to explain extreme global warming events like the Palaeocene–Eocene thermal maximum (PETM) and trigger widespread ocean acidification7. Our analysis suggests that changes in Gulf Stream flow or temperature within the past 5,000 years or so are warming the western North Atlantic margin by up to eight degrees Celsius and are now triggering the destabilization of 2.5 gigatonnes of methane hydrate (about 0.2 per cent of that required to cause the PETM). This destabilization extends along hundreds of kilometres of the margin and may continue for centuries. It is unlikely that the western North Atlantic margin is the only area experiencing changing ocean currents; our estimate of 2.5 gigatonnes of destabilizing methane hydrate may therefore represent only a fraction of the methane hydrate currently destabilizing globally. The transport from ocean to atmosphere of any methane released—and thus its impact on climate—remains uncertain.ALKAIDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12356003882001417021noreply@blogger.com0Calle de la Cebadería, 2, 47001 Valladolid, España41.6529434 -4.728381140.896046399999996 -5.9918086 42.4098404 -3.4649536000000003tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10583190361523947.post-24998638879088114982012-10-24T13:22:00.002+02:002012-10-24T13:22:55.476+02:00Secure the EU research budget for a future-oriented Europe!

A few degrees difference in a single hydrogen bond angle prevents bacteria from importing arsenate in place of phosphate, according to a new study published (October 3) in Nature. Arsenate is structurally very similar to phosphate, but the new research shows that certain proteins responsible for importing phosphate are unable to handle arsenate’s slightly larger size, which warps a key hydrogen bond, allowing certain bacterial species grow in high-arsenate environments.
The findings “show how a gatekeeper [protein] keeps arsenate out [of bacteria], so levels don’t accumulate and the bacteria don’t have to worry about toxic effects,” said Ronald Viola, a chemist at the University of Toledo who was not involved in the research.
The study drives a nail in the coffin of a 2010 Science paper in which NASA researchers claimed to have discovered a strain of Halomonas bacteria in Mono Lake, California, that incorporated arsenate, instead of phosphate, into its DNA backbone. The study generated a stir in the scientific community, drawing much press and criticism. The findings were subsequently refuted by several studies, though the paper has not been retracted.
The new work provides a mechanistic explanation for how the bacteria in Mono Lake glean enough phosphate from their environment to grow, despite the high levels of arsenate in the water. Phosphate is essential to life, being incorporated into cells’ key energy molecule, adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP), and the DNA backbone. While arsenate is similar in size and structure to phosphate, its compounds are much less stable. As a result, if the enzymes incorporate arsenate into ATP, for example, it will result in a “futile” cycle, explained first author Mikael Elias of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel—the cell gets no energy from its efforts because the arsenate-based molecule quickly degrades.
After last year’s controversial study claimed to refute this dogma, Elias and study lead Daniel Tawfik began investigating strategies bacteria use to avoid making this mistake. The researchers turned to phosphate-binding proteins that are part of the transport chain bacteria use to import phosphate from the environment. They cloned phosphate-binding proteins (PBPs) from different species of bacteria, including one from Pseudomonas fluorescens, which are killed by high levels of arsenate, and two from GFAJ-1, the arsenate-tolerate strain from Mono Lake. They then tested the ability of the various PBPs to discriminate between phosphate and arsenate, finding that most had a 500- to 850-higher fold selectivity for phosphate. Even more impressive, GFAJ-1’s PBP-2, which is upregulated in low-phosphate conditions, showed 4,500-fold selectivity for phosphate over arsenate. This extreme selectively presumably allows GFAJ-1 bacteria survive in high-arsenate conditions by binding only phosphate, rare as it may be.
The next step, said Elias, was to figure out how the PBPs distinguish between arsenate and phosphate. Arsenate is only about 4 percent bigger than phosphate by volume, which is one reason some proteins find it difficult to distinguish between the two, Elias explained. X-ray crystallography showed that the PBP from P. fluorescens bound the two molecules with only subtle differences—differences Elias would have missed if his crystallography data hadn’t achieved sub-angstrom resolution. But in the detailed images, the researchers could see that, compared to phosphate, arsenate threw one of the 12 hydrogen bonds in the binding pocket out of alignment.“In hydrogen bonds, the binding angles are very important,” explained Elias, who added that this strategy for discriminating between ions like arsenate and phosphate is “unprecedented to my knowledge.”
“The differences in the bond angles are really quite small, but for good catalytic activity, we know bond angles need to be exquisitely aligned, and it appears to be the same for binding proteins,” said Ken Scott, a molecular biologist at the University of Auckland in New Zealand who was not involved in the research.
The implications of the research are two-fold, said Elias. First, of course, it complements what’s known about how bacteria resist arsenate toxicity: “If the poison is outside, the first level of resistance is not to take it in.” Second, Elias is excited about the potential for applying this discrimination strategy to synthetic biology, perhaps allowing scientists to avoid side-effects by designing drugs with high binding selectivity to the appropriate targets.
Furthermore, this work, as well as the spate of papers providing contradictory evidence to the initial Science paper on the Mono Lake bacteria, demonstrates that “science is working the way it’s supposed to work,” said Viola. “You have an observation, come up with a hypothesis, and test it.”
Abstract
Arsenate and phosphate are abundant on Earth and have striking similarities: nearly identical pKa values, similarly charged oxygen atoms, and thermochemical radii that differ by only 4%. Phosphate is indispensable and arsenate is toxic, but this extensive similarity raises the question whether arsenate may substitute for phosphate in certain niches. However, whether it is used or excluded, discriminating phosphate from arsenate is a paramount challenge. Enzymes that utilize phosphate, for example, have the same binding mode and kinetic parameters as arsenate, and the latter’s presence therefore decouples metabolism. Can proteins discriminate between these two anions, and how would they do so? In particular, cellular phosphate uptake systems face a challenge in arsenate-rich environments. Here we describe a molecular mechanism for this process. We examined the periplasmic phosphate-binding proteins (PBPs) of the ABC-type transport system that mediates phosphate uptake into bacterial cells, including two PBPs from the arsenate-rich Mono Lake Halomonas strain GFAJ-1. All PBPs tested are capable of discriminating phosphate over arsenate at least 500-fold. The exception is one of the PBPs of GFAJ-1 that shows roughly 4,500-fold discrimination and its gene is highly expressed under phosphate-limiting conditions. Sub-ångström-resolution structures of Pseudomonas fluorescens PBP with both arsenate and phosphate show a unique mode of binding that mediates discrimination. An extensive network of dipole–anion interactions, and of repulsive interactions, results in the 4% larger arsenate distorting a unique low-barrier hydrogen bond. These features enable the phosphate transport system to bind phosphate selectively over arsenate (at least 103 excess) even in highly arsenate-rich environments.ALKAIDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12356003882001417021noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10583190361523947.post-66872688204334789402012-08-23T12:32:00.000+02:002012-08-23T12:33:05.795+02:00Record de superficie mínima de hielo en el Artico/Artic Sea ice extent low record

Arctic sea ice extent during the first two weeks of August continued to track below 2007 record low daily ice extents. Sea ice extent dropped rapidly between August 4 and August 8. While this drop coincided with an intense storm over the central Arctic Ocean, it is unclear if the storm prompted the rapid ice loss.

Arctic sea ice extent on August 13 was 5.09 million square kilometers (1.97 million square miles). This is 2.69 million square kilometers (1.04 million square miles) below the 1979 to 2000 average extent for the date, and is 483,000 square kilometers (186,000 square miles) below the previous record low for the date, which occurred in 2007. Low extent for the Arctic as a whole is driven by extensive open water on the Atlantic side of the Arctic, the Beaufort Sea, and—due to rapid ice loss over the past two weeks—the East Siberian Sea. Ice is near its normal (1979 to 2000) extent only off the northeastern Greenland coast. Ice near the coast in eastern Siberia continues to block sections of the Northern Sea Route. The western entrance to the Northwest Passage via McClure Strait remains blocked.

The average pace of ice loss since late June has been rapid at just over 100,000 square kilometers (38,000 square miles) per day. However, this pace nearly doubled for a few days in early August during a major Arctic cyclonic storm. Unlike the summer of 2007 when a persistent pattern of high pressure was present over the central Arctic Ocean and a pattern of low pressure was over the northern Eurasian coast, the summer of 2012 has been characterized by variable conditions. Air tempertures at the 925 hPa level (about 3000 feet above the ocean surface) of 1 to 3 degrees Celsius (1.8 to 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit) above the 1981 to 2012 average have been the rule from central Greenland, northern Canada, and Alaska northward into the central Arctic Ocean. Cooler than average conditions (1 to 2 degrees Celsius or 1.8 to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) were observed in a small region of eastern Siberia extending into the East Siberian Sea, helping explain the persistence of low concentration ice in this region through early August.
Measurements from three satellites showed that on July 8, about 40 percent of the ice sheet had undergone thawing at or near the surface. In just a few days, the melting had dramatically accelerated and an estimated 97 percent of the ice sheet surface, from its thin, low-lying coastal edges to its two-mile-thick center, experienced some degree of melting at its surface by July 12.
On average in the summer, about half of the surface of Greenland's ice sheet naturally melts. At high elevations, most of that melt water quickly refreezes in place, while near the coast, some of the melt water is retained by the ice sheet and the rest is lost to the ocean. But this year, the extent of ice melting at or near the surface has jumped dramatically.
Researchers have not yet determined whether this extensive melt event will affect the overall volume of ice loss this summer and contribute to sea level rise."The Greenland ice sheet is a vast area with a varied history of change. This event, combined with other natural but uncommon phenomena, such as the large calving event last week on Petermann Glacier, are part of a complex story," said Tom Wagner, NASA's cryosphere program manager in Washington. "Satellite observations are helping us understand how events like these may relate to one another as well as to the broader climate system."
The event was discovered by Son Nghiem of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.,while analyzing radar data from the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO). "This was so extraordinary that at first I questioned the result: was this real or was it due to a data error?" Nghiem said. However, the event was confirmed by Dorothy Hall at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Hall studies the surface temperature of Greenland using the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites, and she confirmed that MODIS showed unusually high temperatures and that melt was extensive over the ice sheet surface. Thomas Mote, a climatologist at the University of Georgia, Athens, Ga; and Marco Tedesco of City University of New York also confirmed the melt seen by Oceansat-2 and MODIS with satellite data from a U.S. Air Force meteorological satellite.
This extreme melt event coincided with an unusually strong ridge of warm air, or a heat dome, over Greenland. The ridge was one of a series that has dominated Greenland's weather since the end of May. "Each successive ridge has been stronger than the previous one," said Mote. This latest heat dome started to move over Greenland on July 8, and then parked itself over the ice sheet about three days later. By July 16, it had begun to dissipate. Even the area around Summit Station in central Greenland, which at 2 miles above sea level is near the highest point of the ice sheet, showed signs of melting. Such pronounced melting at Summit and across the ice sheet has not occurred since 1889, according to ice cores analyzed by Kaitlin Keegan at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. The weather station at Summit confirmed air temperatures hovered above or within a degree of freezing for several hours July 11-12.
According to Lora Koenig, member of the research team analyzing the satellite data, "ice cores from Summit show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time, but if we continue to observe melting events like this in upcoming years, it will be worrisome."
The opening image shows the extent of surface melt over Greenland’s ice sheet on July 8 (left) and July 12 (right). Light pink areas are "probable fusion" and the dark pink are "fusion" ones.

As it can be seen in the first Figure, over the second half of the 20th century, parts of the world’s ocean became saltier (red) and parts became fresher (blue) as the amount of water evaporating from the surface and falling as rain increased.
A warming planet may to blame. Simulations in the new study published by Durack et col. in Science suggest evaporation and rainfall got a 4 percent boost as surface temperatures rose half a degree Celsius. That boost is a bigger change than previous studies had suggested, but fits with the idea that a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture.
“We see big broad patterns of change,” says Paul Durack, an oceanographer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. “Regions dominated by evaporation became saltier, while regions dominated by rainfall became fresher.”
Measuring such global changes in Earth’s evaporation and rain cycle has never been easy. Rain gauges on land or at sea tend to be sparsely distributed, and the exact positions of such instruments decades ago isn’t always known.
“Comparing different times gets difficult because you typically have more and better data for the later times,” says William Ingram, an atmospheric physicist at the Met Office Hadley Centre in Exeter and the University of Oxford in England. Ocean salinity provides a fairly stable, reliable way to measure how much water goes up and comes down, says Ingram. Small fluctuations in evaporation and rainfall tend to get smoothed out over time, helping scientists to tease out long-term trends.
Durack’s team analyzed 1.7 million salinity measurements made by ships during the second half of the 20th century. Other researchers had already seen patterns of change in these data, but Durack and his colleagues sharpened the picture. A network of autonomous buoys deployed in the 21st century helped to fill in gaps in the record, particularly in high latitudes where winter storms keep ships away.
As rising greenhouse gas levels continue to warm Earth, the water cycle will churn even harder. Every extra degree is estimated to increase the amount of water moving around by 8 percent.
And what happens in the oceans doesn’t stay in the oceans. The cycle that occurs over water extends over land as well. Dry lands across the globe — Australia, for instance — will probably get drier in the future, as wet places get even wetter, says Durack.
Abstract
Fundamental thermodynamics and climate models suggest that dry regions will become drier and wet regions will become wetter in response to warming. Efforts to detect this long-term response in sparse surface observations of rainfall and evaporation remain ambiguous. We show that ocean salinity patterns express an identifiable fingerprint of an intensifying water cycle. Our 50-year observed global surface salinity changes, combined with changes from global climate models, present robust evidence of an intensified global water cycle at a rate of 8 ± 5% per degree of surface warming. This rate is double the response projected by current-generation climate models and suggests that a substantial (16 to 24%) intensification of the global water cycle will occur in a future 2° to 3° warmer world.ALKAIDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12356003882001417021noreply@blogger.com0Valladolid, España41.6529434 -4.728381141.4631159 -5.0442381 41.8427709 -4.4125241tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10583190361523947.post-25708244388959540962012-04-09T11:16:00.002+02:002012-04-09T11:16:43.873+02:00Los Ojos del Guadiana se abren de nuevo

Pine Island Glacier is a large ice stream flowing west-northwest along the south side of the Hudson Mountains into Pine Island Bay, Amundsen Sea, Antarctica. The area drained by Pine Island Glacier comprises about 10 percent of the West Antarctic Ice Shee, and has the greater net contribution of ice to the sea than any other ice drainage basin in the world, a fact increased due to recent acceleration of the ice stream.
In October 2011, researchers flying in NASA’s Operation IceBridge campaign made, in that glacier, the first-ever detailed, airborne measurements of a major iceberg calving event while it was in progress. The rift formed in an ice shelf extends from more than 30 km (18 miles) in length, an average width of 240 feet (about 80 meters) and was 820 feet (250 meters) at its widest. The canyon ranged from 165 to 190 feet deep (50 to 60 meters), with the floor being roughly at the water line of the Amundsen Sea. Radar measurements suggested the ice shelf is about 1,640 feet (500 meters) feet thick, with only 165 to 190 feet of that floating above water and the rest submerged.
Scientists have been waiting for the crack to propagate through the rest of the ice shelf and release an iceberg, which they estimate could span 300 to 350 square miles (up to 900 square kilometers). If it does not split off soon, however, the sea ice that forms with the onset of southern winter might keep the ice chunk trapped against the coast for a while.
The above image is a still frame captured from a three-dimensional, virtual flight through the new rift in the Pine Island Glacier, created from the data acquired by the NASA's scientists.

To the fans of the 'Star Wars' saga the virtual flight above the rift will seem very similar to the fly through the trench in the Death Star. Enjoy the differences and similarities between reality and fiction!
